Following its principles you are assured of up to thirteen lbs weight loss in a couple of weeks, and the beauty of it is that it’s mostly belly fat. It’s no wonder at its announcement that this diet took the world by storm. This promise is hard to believe.

Fortunately, though, it is the plain reality. When Dr. Agatston outlined the program, his intention was to help his patients suffering from heart ailments, but he immediately noticed that it also causes rapid weight loss. Given its performance, this doctor gave it world-wide publicity.

This diet works on a different principle to most of the other fad diets. It makes a distinction between carbs and fats that are right versus those which are wrong for you. So, what are the right ones? Well, the ones considered beneficial for your health are unsaturated or monosaturated fats and carbs with a low GI (glycaemic index)! Applying that to food examples, try using olive oil instead of butter and rather than potatoes or white bread, swap it for pasta or porridge instead.

The reason why low GI food is preferred is that they are proved to give you energy for a longer time, while high GI foods keep you full only for a very short period of time before hunger returns, thus causing you to eat more than you really need. Hence, foods that are low in GI are crucial if you want to reduce your weight.

And yet this is just one of the recommendations put forth with this regime. The diet is broken down into 3 various stages. Their specifics are:

PHASE 1: Stay off carbohydrates to the greatest extent. Foods like potatoes, bread, white rice, pasta and sweets should be avoided. Low GI aliments such as broccoli or cabbage can be consumed in small quantities. The main focus in the phase however, is to consume fish, eggs, lean meat, low fat cheese and use olive oil. This phase lasts for 2 weeks and if you stay with the suggestions above, it is quite possible to drop between 8-13 lbs.

PHASE 2: The rate at which your weight reduction is happening in this phase is much slower than in the previous one, and it will last until you are happy with your figure! It is common to eliminate about two lbs a week at this stage. You are advised to concentrate your meals around aliments low in GI. This can be items such as low-fat milk, pasta, fruit and wholegrain cereal.

PHASE 3: You will be required to stay on this phase for life! Since you have shifted to a healthy way of eating, your weight will remain constant. It is part of eating a healthy array of foods and a changed lifestyle.

This nutritional program also offers the advantage of allowing you to have as much food on your plate as you need. Eat three times daily until you are full and snack if you have to with healthy alternatives such as nuts for example.

Like most diets, the first week is the hardest as your body tries to adjust and get used to the change, especially as this involves reducing carbohydrates which typically constitutes a major part of most people’s diet. Unfortunately you will have to rely on willpower to help get you through the first week and note that you probably will feel a little more lethargic than normal as your body adjusts.

You need to know that you’ll lose a large amount of weight only in the first two weeks. You will still be able to reach your goal, but not at such a fast pace, so you should be ready for this reality.

So there you have it. The South Beach Diet is not just a quick fix diet that will last a few days, weeks or months but perhaps be considered an overall change for the better. At first it is a good way to eliminate excess fat, but its main purpose is to help you change your eating habits and stay on the right track ever after.
