Current Diet Fads

Filed under: News and Views - 17 Jan 2009

Many people have heard of the Atkins diet, the short name for Atkins nutritional approach.  It’s a low-carb diet created by Robert Atkins.  He had gained a lot of weight in medical school.  A medical Journal had an article about a diet.  He built on that diet and eventually made it popular.

Atkins, in his Atkins Diet, believed prevailing theories about weight gain were all wrong.  He held that saturated fats weren’t as bad as people claim.  Instead it was carbohydrates that led to the weight problems Americans have.  In Atkins theory eating too little fat make things even worse.  Many low-fat foods are packed with carbohydrates.  That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were worse than they normally ate.

The Atkins diet changes this.  He shifts dieters’ metabolism to burn body fats by cutting out carbohydrates from their diets.  Lose the fat lose the weight.  The goal wasn’t necessarily to take in fewer calories.  The diet would work because it burned calories.  In fact Atkins cited a study that claimed the body would burn an extra 950 calories on his diet.  That sounded good but it wasn’t true.

Quick Overview of The Cabbage Soup Diet

Filed under: News and Views - 16 Jan 2009

There’s a very simple explanation for the cabbage soup diet - FRAUD.  There’s really no need for further explanation. But for those who insist here is more.

The inventor of the cabbage soup diet isn’t known. Like a chain letter or junk e-mail it was sent from fax machines to fax machine in the early 80s. There were many names for the diet, sometimes a well-known institution such as St. Jude’s diet. But in reality the diet had nothing to do with many of these namesakes.

Most people on the cabbage soup diet plan drink nothing but water or unsweetened fruit juice.  In general this is the diet.

Day one — cabbage soup and fruit, but not bananas.

Day two — cabbage soup plus vegetables, which could include a half baked potato with no butter.

Day three — cabbage soup and any vegetable or fruit except bananas or potatoes.

Day four — cabbage soup, eight bananas, skimmed milk.

Day five –  as much as 20 ounces of beef +6 tomatoes along with cabbage soup.

Day six — cabbage soup, unlimited beef, and any vegetables except potatoes.

Day seven — cabbage soup, brown rice, vegetables, unsweetened fruit juice, but no potatoes.

The cabbage soup diet claims that people can lose 10 pounds in only one week.  While it may be possible, most of that weight will be water weight. Nutritionists agree that it’s just not possible to lose 10 pounds of fat in only one week. What the cabbage soup diet could accomplish in a week is to make someone sick from eating poorly.

In addition the cabbage soup diet isn’t easy. In general this isn’t because it’s difficult to understand but rather because cabbage soup isn’t a lot of fun. Quitting the cabbage soup diet after only a few days was common. There was even an attempt to spice up the cabbage soup diet with new recipes, but that failed.

Realistically people don’t need a fad diet like the cabbage soup diet to lose weight. A program of exercise plus cutting down calories than what you normally eat on a day-to-day basis can be very effective.

Review Of South Beach Diet

Filed under: News and Views - 08 Jan 2009

The idea behind the South Beach Diet Program is that when the body accepts fat and carbohydrates differently, people can then lose weight. The diet works to get people to stop craving sugar so they can lose weight.

The Overview

This diet works in 3 phases. First, dieters are not allowed to eat sugars. For fourteen days, processed sugars are completely eliminated. The two-weeks is meant to rid dieters of the sugar eating habit.

During the second phase, the foods that were eliminated are brought back in. Moderation is the key during this phase.

When dieters move to the third phase, they focus on maintaining their weight. This phase focuses on people using what they have learned in order to keep the weight off.

Meal Preparation

Fresh meat, fruit, and low carb choices are needed. Some dieters find the ingredients to be a bit expensive for the meals. Those with kids will likely want to make them a non-diet meal.

Every meal does not have to be prepared at home. There are prepackaged meals available at most grocery stores.

Vegetarians need to look at the requirements and see if they can follow the diet and the choices offered.

Does it Work?

This diet can work for people who have the willpower to follow it. The first phase can be difficult, but those who are able to get through the phase and continue on with the diet can do well. Weight can be lost when the plan is followed.

Weight can be lost on this diet with or without exercise. It does not come with an exercise plan. However, more fat can be lost when dieters choose to incorporate exercise with the diet. Those who want to exercise will need to incorporate their own workout plan with the diet program. You can also check out in-depth review of South Beach Diet to help you decide if this is the diet for you.
