Since the holiday season started last month all that the fitness community has been talking about is how to avoid gaining weight and what foods have the most calories, and all the stuff that makes me roll my eyes. Every time you pick up that Christmas cookie you feel the weight on your shoulders, but you shouldn’t. The truth is that the average weight gain over the holidays isn’t five pounds… it’s only around 1 pound.

Not that that is an excuse to chow down but it should help you to relax a little bit. And if you’ve been counting each calorie over the past few weeks then it’s time to give your body a break, let it know you’re not unintentionally starving and that in and of itself will help boost your metabolism up.

I’ve been eating very clean for the past, well, ever so enjoying my family with great food over the coming weekend won’t make my pants fit tighter or make me feel the urge to buy bigger clothes.

On top of that, I do still stick to a workout plan that can travel with me to help burn off the glasses of wine and the extra holiday treats that I am sure will find their way in front of my. In terms of planning workouts, I love intervals because they can be done anywhere, no equipment needed, they are intense, fast and really effective. Just choose 4-6 exercises, choose a time limit for each (I love 30 seconds on with a 10 second rest) and repeat the circuit for 3-6 times or around 12-15 minutes for best results.

And last, while I totally believe in enjoying myself over the holidays I don’t see it as a green light to binge eat either. I just go by the one plate rule… no seconds and I limit my alcoholic drinks by alternating them with water (I feel great the next morning because of this.)So I make sure to fill up my plate just once, choose just one dessert and limit myself to just 2 glasses of wine (the wine is the hardest part).

A lot of times we eat seconds not because we’re hungry but because it’s as if they are calling our name. Best off, to just put in ear plugs and enjoy one plate. Your stomach will thank you for sure.
